The large red barn at Mianus River Park will be transformed from a dilapidated drinking hangout into a nature center focused on animal rehabilitation and educational services, city officials announced Monday.
The nonprofit will raise $4 million through private donations to launch the center, which could open in two years depending on fundraising, said co-founder Cathie Kovacs.
The nature center will also partner with schools to provide educational opportunities, co-founder Heather Bernatchez said Monday.
Board of Representatives President Randy Skigen said the wildlife center represents a productive use of the park's iconic red barn, which in the past has attracted "kids and adults" who have used the vacant space to drink or use drugs, he said.
