Malloy is a new grandfather

STAMFORD — Gov. Dannel Malloy announced at an appearance in his hometown Monday that just hours earlier his son and daughter-in-law welcomed his and wife Cathy’s first grandchild. Malloy, Stamford’s former mayor, said Grace was born at 3:30 a.m. She is the daughter of Malloy’s oldest son, Dannel, and his wife. The governor has two other sons, Ben and Sam. “I joined the ranks of a grandfather today,” Malloy said at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. The governor was visiting Stamford for the groundbreaking of a new environmental education farmhouse, which was funded partly by the state.

Stamford boy, 16, leads chase in stolen car to New York state

STAMFORD — A city boy has been charged with leading police on a chase past the New York state border in a stolen truck and ramming three police cars before flipping the vehicle over on its roof. Sgt. Jennifer Lynch said the incident began just after midnight Sunday, when a red pickup truck whizzed past a patrol car that was on East Main Street near Lockwood Avenue. The officers gave chase and tried to stop the vehicle without success. Getting a glimpse of the construction company emblem on its doors, police asked dispatchers to call the business to see if the owner knew who was driving the truck. But the owner looked out in his driveway to see the vehicle missing and reported it stolen.

Greenwich robbery trial to start at Stamford courthouse

STAMFORD-The trial of a New Haven man charged with tying up a Cosi restaurant employee during an armed robbery in 2010 is set to begin in front of a jury Tuesday morning at the Stamford courthouse. The trial will determine whether a Stamford jury will convict a man on DNA evidence alone, with no corroborating evidence. The defendant, Jermaine Adams, 44, of Chapel Street, remains in custody unable to post a $500,000 bond since his arrest in 2015 -almost five years after the robbery took place. His attorney Dan Ford declined comment on the upcoming trial at the courthouse on Monday. In his arrest affidavit, Greenwich police said they were called to the Cosi restaurant on West Putnam Avenue a little after 10 p.m. on Sept.

Coffee With a Cop meetings in Stamford Wednesday

STAMFORD-Stamford police are kicking off their Coffee With a Cop effort this Autumn with two, count ‘em two, coffee klatches with the men and women in blue on Wednesday Oct. 4. First, community outreach officers and district sergeants will be at Starbucks in the Ridgeway Shopping Center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The second event will take place at Dunkin’ Donuts at 979 East Main Street from noon to 2 p.m. The informal community meetings coincide with Wednesday’s National Coffee With a Cop day. The Coffee With a Cop effort in Stamford began in March 2017. That month police officers met with members of the East Side community at the Trailblazers Academy on Lockwood Avenue.

Three charged in Stamford knife assault

STAMFORD — Three city men have been accused of beating and threatening a man with a knife behind a West Side bodega. Sgt. Jennifer Lynch said a witness told officers three young men armed with knives surrounded a 36-year-old man behind the Richmond Hill Mini Market about 2 p.m. Sunday. The witness said the trio beat the victim while waving the knives, Lynch said. The witness said he yelled at them and eventually got them to stop. Lynch said security video corroborated the witness’ story. Selvin Orellana, 26, of Greenwich Avenue, Alexander Jiminez-Mendez, 19, and Brandon Espinoza, 18, were each charged Monday with breach of peace, assault, conspiracy to commit assault and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Americares delivers medical aid to Puerto Rico

STAMFORD — Americares, the Stamford-based disaster relief and global health organization, has delivered a planeload of medical aid to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the nonprofit has stationed emergency response teams in the wake of Hurricane Maria. The nonprofit delivered more than 3 tons of medicine and supplies from its Stamford distribution center. It’s working with the island’s department of health to distribute supplies to hospitals and clinics. Puerto Rico has been without power and water since the hurricane made landfall Sept. 20. “Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage, and we are very concerned about the health and safety of survivors,” Americares Director of Emergency Response Kate Dischino said.

Stamford teen accused of crashing stolen pickup

STAMFORD — New York police have identified a 16-year-old boy who they say crashed into several cop cars as he drove across the state line this week in a stolen pickup. Stamford resident Dereck Ramirez has been charged in New York with criminal possession of stolen property, attempted second-degree assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. New York State Police said Ramirez struck three Stamford police cars, including slamming into one head-on that caused the stolen pickup truck he was driving to flip over Monday night in Pound Ridge, N.Y. After pulling him out of the overturned vehicle, police said they found Ramirez in possession of a BB gun.

Teen carrying pistol arrested on Stamford’s West Side

STAMFORD-City police investigating an attempted car burglary on Stamford’s West Side arrested a 19-year-old city man and charged him with carrying a loaded pistol early Wednesday morning. Sgt. Jennifer Lynch said patrol officers were pulling up to the corner of Diaz and Piave streets at about 12:40 a.m. Wednesday when they spotted a man walking east on Piave Street. As they pulled up to the corner they saw the man pull on the door handle of a car as went. Looking up, the man spotted the patrol car and immediately turned around while shoved both hands into the pockets of his winter coat, Lynch said. He then turned the right side of his body away from them.

San Diego woman charged in $110,000 Stamford theft

STAMFORD-A San Diego, California woman turned herself over to Stamford police and was charged Wednesday with depositing a forged check for $110,000 into her bank account. Police say the money belonged to a 61-year-old Stamford man, who unbeknownst to him had the money transferred out of his local Wells Fargo bank account. Sgt. Steve Perrotta said the complaint originated in early February when a city man complained to police that the money had been taken from his account. Police quickly determined that the forged check had been written to Nanette Hayes, 62, of San Diego.

Guilty verdict for New Haven man in Greenwich robbery

STAMFORD-After only three hours of deliberation on DNA evidence alone, a Stamford jury on Thursday convicted a New Haven man of using a gun to rob a Greenwich Cosi restaurant in 2010. The jury convicted ex-con Jermaine Adams, 44, of armed robbery solely on DNA evidence taken from a straw found at the scene of the crime.. “He is disappointed in the outcome,” said his defense attorney Dan Ford. “He will review his options and determine whether there were anya issues for appeal.” Adams, who before trial was offered a 10 year sentence and 10 years special parole if he pleaded out to the robbery charge, is facing a five-year-mandatory minimum jail sentence and up to 20 years when he returns for sentencing in Dec., 15.

City man identified in Stamford Harbor drowning

STAMFORD — A 33-year-old city man drowned Friday in Stamford Harbor. Police are investigating how Rasheed Hines ended up in the water near the harbor’s East Branch about 11 a.m. Friday. “He apparently waded into the water and began struggling and yelling for help,” Capt. Richard Conklin said. Several witnesses saw Hines and tried to help, including one person who dove into the water and retrieved his wallet, which helped police quickly identify his body. “We really don’t know what happened,” Conklin said. “We are trying to reach out to additional witnesses and looking for video in the area. We are meeting with the family to see if they can give us any insight.

Slight Metro North schedule changes to go into effect Sunday

New timetables for the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven line Metro North trains will go into effect Sunday. Metro North announced that some adjustments will allow infrastructure work to continue on the rails while some recently-completed track work will return trains to their normal schedules. On the Hudson line, weekday trains departing form Croton-Harmon at 5:15 a.m., 5:40 a.m., 6:37 a.m. and 8:12 a.m. will operate one minute earlier. In the evening, the 6:59 p.m. train will depart from Grand Central four minutes earlier at 6:55 and the 7:21 p.m. train from Grand Central will stop four minutes earlier at stations through Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie.

Contractor involved in Stamford Christmas fire dies

STAMFORD — The contractor involved in the fatal 2011 Christmas fire died last week and never “recovered” from the incident that killed his girlfriend’s three daughters and their grandparents, his attorney said. Michael Borcina, 58, came under scrutiny and was involved in several lawsuits following the Shippan fire that killed 9-year-old Lily Badger and 7-year-old twins Sarah and Grace, as well as their grandparents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson. The girls’ mother, Madonna Badger, and Borcina survived. “In many respects, Michael was unfairly portrayed in the press,” Borcina’s attorney, Robert Laney, said Sunday. “The fire had a dramatic impact on him. He loved those little girls. I’m not sure he ever recovered from it.

Youth sentenced to five years for Stamford carjacking

STAMFORD — A man who pleaded guilty to the violent carjacking of a city woman last year will face five years in prison. Bryan Alfaro, 20, of Greenwich Avenue, pleaded guilty in June to first-degree larceny, third-degree robbery and the carjacking of a 23-year-old Stamford woman on June 12, 2016. Alfaro was facing up to seven years in jail, but his attorney Howard Ehring successfully argued to Judge Richard Comerford for less jail time. Ehring said Alfaro was high on drugs at the time of the carjacking. “He now completely realizes how traumatic it was for the woman involved,” Ehring said.

Cops net five ounces of cocaine in Stamford drug bust

STAMFORD — City police said they captured a suspected drug dealer returning from New York City with fresh supplies and charged him with possession of almost five ounces of cocaine worth about $18,000. Darren Baldwin, 31, of North Street was charged with possession of narcotics, sale of narcotics, interfering with police and possession of drug paraphernalia and was held in lieu of a $50,000 court appearance bond. Capt. Richard Conklin said officers in the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad heard that Baldwin would be returning home Friday afternoon with a new supply of cocaine from New York. The officers kept an eye out for him and watched as he pulled up to his apartment complex at about 1:10 p.m. in a gray 2012 Acura.

Stamford teen charged with gun possession, second youth to be charged in a week

STAMFORD — For the second time in a week, Narcotics and Organized Crime officers said they took a loaded gun off a troubled teen; this time the youth was 17 years old. Capt. Richard Conklin said the officers were on patrol in the South End and keeping an eye on a residence that has been the source of a number of complaints of people drinking or doing drugs on the front stoop. As the officers pulled up, they saw a 17-year-old boy reach into his waistband and push something down his pants, according to Conklin. One of the officers patted the youth down and found a .380 caliber Hi-Point Firearms semiautomatic pistol. Conklin said there was a bullet in the gun’s chamber and three more in the magazine.

STAMFORD — Three juveniles were arrested Tuesday in a stolen SUV after police say the driver nearly struck a construction worker and an officer. Sgt. Richard Gasparino was directing traffic for construction work on Second Street between Summer and Bedford streets about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday when he spotted a speeding Ford Escape. Gasparino said the SUV nearly struck a construction worker. Gasparino said he put his hand up and yelled for the driver to stop, but he said the vehicle came just inches from hitting him in the middle of the road. Gasparino said he could smell marijuana when the driver rolled down his window. Gasparino said the driver appeared disoriented and didn’t have a license.

STAMFORD — Police say a Blue Light Emergency Phone alert helped them track down a robbery suspect Monday in Veterans Park. Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said police were alerted to a problem at the downtown park at 10:05 a.m. Monday by a witness who activated the emergency phone and camera after seeing a man assault a woman. Officers found the victim who said a man stole her cellphone. The woman told officers she was walking down Main Street when the man asked her about the phone, Shawinsky said. The woman said she knew the man, identified as Omar Wright, 33, and he tried to pick her up and throw her to the ground, Shawinsky said. The woman said Wright grabbed her phone and ran away, Shawinsky said.

Three years prison for Norwalk woman who supplied heroin to overdose victim

STAMFORD — A Norwalk woman has been sentenced to three years in jail for supplying the heroin that killed a young Easton woman who overdosed earlier this year. During an emotional hearing at the Stamford courthouse Tuesday in which the victim’s teenage sister was present, Judge Gary White handed down the prison sentence to 54-year-old Lori Ledonne, of Isaacs Street, Norwalk.
