Stamford felon, on parole for less than two months, heads back to jail on gun charges

STAMFORD — A convicted felon who in August finished serving a three year jail sentence for an armed robbery that left a man brain damaged was arrested on Tuesday night on gun possession and other charges. Capt. Richard Conklin said officers in the Narcotics and Organized Crime squad were near the Southwood Square Apartments on Pequot Drive shortly after 9 p.m. and spotted a large group in the rear of the complex. The officers identified 29-year-old Roland Newton in the group, a Stamford man who police knew had a no-trespassing order placed on him for that property. Officers approached and, putting a hand on his waist, discovered a 9 mm Glock semiautomatic pistol, Conklin said.

STAMFORD — A city man will receive probation for assaulting a Hispanic immigrant with a broomstick while shouting ethnic slurs at the victim and his friends last year on East Main Street. Erick Sanchez, 20, of Tresser Boulevard, pleaded guilty this week to felony counts of first-degree assault and intimidation based on bigotry or bias. According to the plea agreement, Sanchez will receive no jail time but will serve three years probation. He could be sent to jail for up to five years if he breaks the law while on probation. Police said the incident began when Sanchez walked past four Hispanic men drinking beers behind an East Main Street garage on Oct. 20, 2016.

Police: UConn student in ICU after near drowning

STAMFORD — A University of Connecticut student is in stable, but critical condition after a near drowning incident Friday afternoon, police officials said. The 20-year-old student was swimming with a friend at a YMCA pool around 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, Sgt. Sean Boeger said. He said the student went under a few minutes after 4 p.m., but that the friend did not see what happened. “The friend didn’t see him go under,” Boeger said. “He was looking for him and saw he was already under.” Boeger said it is unclear how long the student was underwater for, but it was estimated to be anywhere from one to five minutes.

Stamford man convicted of fatal shooting faces new gun charges

STAMFORD — A man who was convicted in a 2010 fatal shooting was arrested Saturday on gun possession charges. Police charged Lamar Taylor, 30, after officers said they found a weapon in his car. An officer patrolling near the Elks Club on Mission Street, where police said they frequently get complaints of shootings, fights and drugs, saw 10 men loitering in the parking lot around 12:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. The officer, Lt. Diedrich Hohn, believed the men were drinking and smoking marijuana, police said. Police said Taylor put something in the driver’s seat of his car. Taylor was wearing winter gloves in the humid weather, which tipped Hohn off that he could be hiding drugs or a weapon, police said.

STAMFORD — A man was mugged and beaten while walking down East Main early Monday morning. Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said police responded about 1 a.m. Monday to a reported robbery next to the Firestone dealership near the railroad bridge on East Main. The man, who told police he had been drinking heavily, said he was walking from Taco Bell to Culloden Road when he sensed someone was following him. Two men appeared behind him when he got to Crystal Street and demanded his money. He tried to defend himself, but the two men took his wallet and ripped his shirt and took his shoes in the process. Pinto said no weapons were displayed during the robbery and no further descriptions of the two assailants were available.

Busboy accused of punching co-worker at Stamford restaurant

STAMFORD — A busboy at a Summer Street restaurant has been accused of punching a co-worker in the face during a dispute over a food ticket, police said. Police were called to The Fez about 10:30 p.m. Sunday for a report of a fight in the kitchen of the Moroccan restaurant. Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said Edgar Marroquin, 21, got into an arguement with a waiter over food tickets in the restaurant that migrated into the kitchen. Witnesses told police Marroquin punched the 21-year-old male waiter twice in the face, Pinto said. The owner of the restaurant walked into the kitchen and fired Marroquin, 21, who then left the establishment, Pinto said. Police called Marroquin and arranged to meet him.

STAMFORD — A renovated wing with rooms for children opened earlier this month at Stamford Hospital’s Whittingham Pavilion. The Cohen Children’s Unit was funded by the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation, and designed by architects at EYP Health, which helped create the 650,000-square-foot Stamford Hospital that opened in 2016. It has 10 private patient rooms, a family lounge and extra space for guests to stay overnight.

STAMFORD-About a dozen city police officers were pranked by what was probably an international gamer claiming that he shot someone and had taken hostages in the Turn of River neighborhood just before midnight Monday. Sgt. Simon Blanc said 911-dispatch was called at 11:16 p.m. Monday by someone who said a juvenile had been shot in the stomach at a residence on Cedar Heights Road. Before disconnecting the emergency call, the caller claimed to have an AR-15 assault rifle and said he had taken some hostages. Blanc said multiple units raced with lights and sirens to the address, just south of the Merritt Parkway, and set up a perimeter around the house.

Pet pig abandoned at Stamford vet hospital

STAMFORD — A sick pet pig was abandoned Tuesday at a veterinary clinic in the South End and authorities are searching for its owners, who they say also kept illegal wild animals. The two women who brought Emma, a 5-pound pot bellied pig, to Cornell University Veterinary Specialists left to go to their car at 6:45 a.m. and never returned, Animal Control Officer Tilford Cobb said. They gave false names and telephone numbers to the clinic, where the pig has been experiencing seizures and may be euthanized, he said. “It’s the cutest little pig,” Cobb said. “It will not stop having seizures. They don’t know what’s going on.” The women also told the clinic they have cats and dogs, as well as a squirrel, iguana and bird at home, Cobb said.

Minor gas leak empties Hart Elementary School in Stamford

STAMFORD-Hart Magnet Elementary School was evacuated early Thursday afternoon because of a minor gas leak. A fire official said that maintenance workers were purging a gas line of water on the roof of the Adams Avenue school, which released a small amount of gas into the building. As a result the school was evacuated at about 2 p.m. and firefighters arrived to ventilate the area that smelled of gas and make sure the leak was contained. jnickerson@stamfordadvocate.com

Man critically injured in parking lot crash in Stamford

STAMFORD — One man was critically injured and a dozen parked cars were damaged when an elderly woman struck the vehicles Friday morning in the parking lot of a Strawberry Hill apartment complex. A 50-year-old man was trapped under one of the cars and went to Stamford Hospital with what was initially believed to be a broken leg and a minor injury to his head. He was later flown to Westchester County Medical Center in critical condition. The 82-year-old woman driver was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sgt. Rich Gasparino said the woman driving a silver Honda CR-V may have suffered a medical emergency when she struck the cars at a high rate of speed.

Shelter Rock Road in Bethel to be closed this week

BETHEL—A stretch of Shelter Rock Road will be closed to all traffic except local traffic for a week, starting Monday, town officials announced last week. The section of the road between Walnut Hill Road and Payne Road will be closed each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 31, the town said. Residents and school buses will be allowed on the road during the closures. The closure will allow workers to install storm drains, according to a town Facebook post. A paving schedule will be announced following the drainage work completion.

STAMFORD-Before jury selection in the case of a man charged with nearly cutting off the hand of a suitor to his ex-girlfriend commences Tuesday, motions to throw out evidence from from the state and defendant will be heard at the Stamford courthouse today. On June 26, 2015 Cesar Oliverio, 37, allegedly entered his former girlfriend’s apartment and laid in wait for her to return from what he suspected was a date, police said. When the former girlfriend and another man arrived late at night back at her apartment on Camp Avenue in Springdale, he attacked the man, his arrest affidavit says.

STAMFORD-A city man was punched and robbed of his wallet on a South End street corner early Monday morning. Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said the man was walking home early Monday after doing some drinking at the Peruvian Club on Atlantic Street. Less than a block away when he came up to Henry Street, two tall men walked up to him and punched him in the face and took his wallet containing $200. The man was sent to Stamford Hospital for treatment and police were called when the man said he had been mugged. Shawinsky said police were sent out to canvass the neighborhood, but no suspects were located jnickerson@stamfordadvocate.com

New York man picked up with 43 counterfeit bills in Stamford

STAMFORD — A New York City man was picked up at the Stamford Town Center mall for allegedly using fake money to make purchases on Sunday, police said. Capt. Richard Conklin said police were called to the Zara clothing store on the fifth level of the mall at about 5 p.m. on the report of a man who had just passed 13 counterfeit $20 bills and picked up two blazers. Store employees told police that a man fitting the description recently passed some counterfeit bills at their sister store in Greenwich. With a description of the man, they found Jephthe Roseus, 31, coming out of the H&M clothing store on the same level. Store employees at H&M told police Roseus allegedly just purchased clothes after passing seven more fake bills.

State proposes rates for new commuter railroad

HARTFORD - A commuter railroad from New Haven to Springfield, Massachusetts is set to open next year — the first new rail line in Connecticut in decades. A proposed rate schedule released this week for the CTrail Hartford line shows a one-way trip from New Haven to Springfield will cost $12.75, and $8 from New Haven to Hartford. When Hartford Line service begins in 2018, CTrail and Amtrak will offer 17 week day round trips beginning in 2018, with 12 continuing on to Springfield. The proposed rates apply only to the state owned CTrail trains.

STAMFORD — A 41-year-old man who was charged earlier this year with sexually assaulting his niece has now been accused of raping the girl’s younger sister. The man, whose identity is being withheld to protect the victims, was charged this week with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. The man has been jailed since June when he was charged with raping the girl’s older sister, a sexual assault that impregnated the girl, according to his arrest affidavit. The investigation began about a year ago when an administrator at the girl’s school asked the teen to write about how she was feeling. After reading what the girl wrote, the administrator reported it to the state Department of Children and Families.
