Voight was among more than 600 competitors who took part in the event, which benefits Cos Cob-based Kids in Crisis, Fairfield County's only short-term emergency shelter and counseling center for abused and neglected children newborn to age 17.
Shari Shapiro, executive director for Kids in Crisis, said the increased participation from last year showed support for the group's mission of trying to counsel families during economic challenges and personal travails such as substance abuse recovery, or other problems that can spark rancor and conflict.
Alongside the organization's shelter services, the group looks to use hotline services and face-to-face counseling sessions early on to avert abuse or conflict that can result in state intervention and foster care, Shapiro said.
Thomas, 40, a former Wall Street broker who now heads his own physical fitness company, Personal Training Professionals of Southport, said he has been hit by cars twice during his racing career.
Rohrs, who works as a marketing professional for Pepperidge Farm in Norwalk, said she came back to compete in the event for the challenging course and level of organization, but said Sunday's torrid temperatures in the lower 90s forced her to conserve energy.
The city of Stamford benefits dramatically from the agency's services, which help prevent more protracted separations of biological parents and their children through foster care and other state-ordered oversight, Day said.
